Sant Joan is the less populated municipality of the island, with only 5,500 inhabitants that live on the scattered houses of this land. It has four quiet and rural villages, and farmers live by a few foreigners that have settled down there. The villages are Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Llorenç de Balàfia, Sant Miquel de Balanzat and Sant Vicent de Sa Cala.
Although the town is less tourist infrastructure has three major areas of hotels: Portinatx, Port de Sant Miquel and Cala de Sant Vicent. The concentration of agritourism and rural hotels is very important in this environment, as some families have chosen this solution to maintain the heritage of their ancestors.
Most of the municipal territory is part of the nature reserve Es Amunts, occupying a quarter of the island. This area has spectacular rugged landscapes, with high cliffs, mountains, dense forests and small bays that make up a unique ecosystems of great ecological value.
Best thing in Sant Joan –the most isolated municipality- is getting lost through paths and discover new landscapes. You can come across watchtowers, stunning country homes, chapels, and important monuments like Balàfia’s settlement, or archaeological findings like the Punic sanctuary Es Culleram. Also stunning is the cave called Marçà.
