Cala Mastella restaurant, better known as ‘El Bigotes’, is one of the most picturesque, original and unforgettable establishments on the island. Its creator, Juan Ferrer, used to prepare Bullit de peix for his friends, with fish of the day, every now and then. These small gatherings soon became large crowds, and this is why for forty years, and for little money, anyone can enjoy a real fisherman meal, in the “true spot”. Although ‘el Bigotes’ has since retired, you are likely to find at the restaurant. The dining-room, under a wooden roof, could not be simpler, but this is part of its charm. It is impossible to book a table by phone, so the only way is to go and ask if there are free seats at the communal tables. In August you are likely to find a two-week waiting list.

Our recommendations
Bullit de peix with creamy rice is usually the single dish. It is cooked in a wood oven, and it is always served at 14,30 o’clock. Before that, at 12,30, you can have grilled rock fish and salad. Miguel, the husband of ‘el Bigotes’’ daughter Ana, is now responsible for fishing all the fish for the Bullit, and once he takes them out of the sea starts cooking them. Ana and their daughter Mónica serve the clients. Don’t expect fine tablecloths and crystal glasses. In ‘El Bigotes’ there isn’t even a gas stove: everything is cooked on logs. For this reason the bullit de peix with rice on the side is practically a single course, and a delicious one, though. It is always served at exactly 2:30 p.m. Before that, at 12, they offer portions of grilled rock-fish and mix salad. If you wish any dessert you can always have some fresh fruit. The red wine list is quite limited, but not the white one, and in any case there is enough to satisfy all tastes. Try not to miss it!

How to arrive
From Ibiza, take the road to Santa Eulalia and Sant Joan. Arriving in Santa Eulalia, pass long this town and continue straight on towards Sant Carles. Already in this town, take the road that runs behind the church. 2 km. below, to the right, you will see the turning for Cala Llenya, with an island in the road. Keep to the left without getting into it. 300 meters after the road ends and forced to turn. Go right and then take the first road off to the left, next to some crops. After 700 meters, without deviating from this path, you will find Cala Mastella. The restaurant is on the small fishing port, to the left of the cove, connected by the shore by a path. When you reach Cala Mastella you can get to the restaurant walking down a twenty-metre path which goes along the left shore of the cove. Also can park next to the restaurant along the beach on the cliff.
